V4:1
RACE 9: THE FRED HOOPER (G3)
1 COAL FRONT is stretching out to a 1-turn mile after breaking from Post 11 and drawing clear to win the 7- furlong Grade 3 Mr Prospector with a razor-sharp performance. Trainer Todd Pletcher has John Velazquez handling his first outing at 8 furlongs. 6 AZTEC SENSE makes a lot of sense in this spot after going undefeated in 8 consecutive races in 2018. The gelding will be tested for class vs graded stakes competition.
4 BREAKING LUCKY, a Grade 1 stakes-placed 7-year- old son of Lookin At Lucky, signaled he was back when he returned from the layoff to wallop a field of $62,500 optional claimers at this 1-mile distance.
SELECTIONS: 1-6-4
V4:2
RACE 10: THE W. L. MCKNIGHT (G3)
4 ZULU ALPHA, who won the Grade 3 Sycamore at this 12-furlong distance, is stretching out for trainer Mike Maker after failing to mount a rally when finishing 7th here in the 9-furlong Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale. The son of Street Cry has Irad Ortiz Jr handling the added distance. 7 CANESSAR (FR) is making his first start since a pair of sharp distance races last summer in which he was 2nd in the 2-mile Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup, and 2nd – beaten a neck – in the 12-furlong Stars N Stripes at Arlington on July 7th. Trainer Arnaud Delacour is 31% with the longer than 180 days layoff.
2 SOGLIO, 4-1-0-2 at the distance, is turning back after finishing a troubled 2nd (lacked room) in the 2-mile $100,000 Allen Jerkens. Trainer Maker, who also trains Zulu Alpha, has Jose Ortiz on this half of his uncoupled entry.
SELECTIONS: 4-7-2
V4:3
8 DELTA PRINCE, a Grade 1 stakes-placed son of Street Cry, who is bred to love this distance, stretches out to get the call as the upset special. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens removes the blinkers, and has Frankie Dettori atop the son of Street Cry. 7 BRICKS AND MORTAR, a perfect 2 for 2 over this course, is stretching out to a mile and three-sixteenths after returning from the 14-month layoff to defeat a field of $75,000 optional claimers, which should set her up perfectly for this Grade 1 event. Trainer Chad Brown has the daughter of Giant’s Causeway working sharply for her date with history.
2 YOSHIDA (JPN), a Grade 1 winner on both turf and dirt, is returning to the grass in the first race since finishing 4th – beaten less than 2 lengths – by Accelerate in the 10-furlong Breeders’ Cup Classic. Trainer Bill Mott has Jose Ortiz atop strictly the one to beat.
SELECTIONS: 8-7-2
V4:4
RACE 12: THE PEGASUS CUP INVITATIONAL (G1)
5 ACCELERATE is making the final start of his world- class career fresh off his victory in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Trainer John Sadler has Joel Rosario atop the Horse of the Year finalist. 3 CITY OF LIGHT, the only horse to defeat Accelerate last year in the 10- furlong Grade 1 Gold Cup, renews the rivalry fresh off his victory in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Trainer Mike McCarthy has Javier Castellano in the saddle. 8 GUNNEVERA, 8 for 9 ‘in the money’ locally, will try to parlay his horse-for-course status in a local victory in the first start since finishing 2nd behind Accelerate in the Classic.
SELECTIONS: 5-3-8
